Brent D. Sokol
Brent Sokol litigates complex intellectual property disputes, including patents, trademarks and copyrights. Brent is a frequent speaker on intellectual property rights in the life sciences industry, including presentations at the Fogarty Institute of Innovation and ACI’s Advanced Summits on Medical Device Patent Litigation and Licensing. A former biomedical engineer, Brent has significant jury trial and patent prosecution experience in the field of medical devices. In addition to his lead litigation experience, he has developed patent portfolios for several life science companies.
Brent’s recent representations include a major cancer research hospital regarding patent inventorship of certain chimeric antigen receptors (“CARs”) used in cancer treatments; a clinical stage biotechnology company concerning inventorship of its investigational biopharmaceutical drug; and an RF ablation catheter company in connection with its global patent strategy and $800 million dollar acquisition by a major medical device manufacturer. Other medical device and life sciences patent experience includes Algodyne, Embol-X, Embrace, General Surgical Innovations, Gen-Probe, IDesia, Mentor, and Neocrin.
Brent has secured a $39 million jury award in a patent case for a major manufacturer of minimally invasive surgical instruments. In the countersuit, Brent obtained summary judgement of inequitable conduct leading to an award of over $1 million in attorneys’ fees in favor of his client.
Brent is an Associate National Commissioner of the Anti-Defamation League, authored the successful ADL amicus brief to the 9th Circuit in the Boise churchstate case, and is Civil Rights Committee co-chair for the Los Angeles Chapter of the ADL.
