John P. Iwanicki is a registered patent attorney with 25+ years of experience analyzing intricate legal issues from a cutting edge perspective in procuring and enforcing intellectual property rights in the chemical, pharmaceutical, life sciences and biotechnology industries. Start-ups and established companies alike rely on John to understand their business objectives when designing strategies to achieve market exclusivity and freedom to operate. John works closely with clients to develop and manage pragmatic patent portfolios and to advise clients on the patent portfolios of others when making licensing or investment decisions.

John has been representing the technology transfer offices of pre-eminent research universities throughout his career, working with several Nobel laureates. John has worked hand-in-hand with universities and their licensees to create international patent portfolios not only for initial discoveries but also for second and third generation products and methods. Merging the interests of university inventors with the business objectives of licensees is a hallmark of John’s ability to analyze and create a patent strategy that is a win-win from all perspectives.

John is the rare combination of a patent litigator and patent prosecutor. Possessing both skill sets, John provides a perspective unique in the industry from which to obtain and enforce patents. John’s litigation skills enhance the marshaling of evidence and persuasive presentation often needed to build a case of patentability through written prosecution, personal interviews with the Examiner at the USPTO or oral hearing before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Likewise, understanding how patents are drafted, argued and obtained is critical to an effective enforcement of patent rights or to a defense of infringement allegations. Understanding how patents can be attacked is the best education for building strong patents. Understanding how to build strong patents lowers the risk for a successful attack.

John is a frequent speaker and writer on cutting edge patent issues. He has been a regular presenter at the American Conference Institute’s Biotech Bootcamp or Hatch-Waxman Bootcamp conferences. John has also spoken at Cambridge Healthtech conferences and IBC Lifesciences conferences.
