Brent Sokol litigates complex intellectual property disputes, including patents, trademarks and copyrights. Brent is a frequent speaker on intellectual property rights, including presentations at the Fogarty Institute for Innovation and ACI's Advanced Summits on Medical Device Patent Litigation and Licensing. A former biomedical engineer, Brent has significant jury trial and patent prosecution experience in the field of medical devices. He has developed patent portfolios for several life science companies.
Brent's recent lead representations include Ardian, an RF ablation catheter company, in connection with its global patent strategy; Digigraph.me, Inc. in a declaratory judgment action regarding its network communications patents; and the defense of PriceGrabber.com in two patent infringement cases over the updating of database records. A litigator with a broad background in high-profile cases, Brent has represented Mattel in connection with congressional hearings and investigations concerning toys allegedly sold in violation of regulatory standards. Other companies Brent has represented include DreamWorks, funnyordie.com, Sunkist, Target, and Toyota. Medical device experience includes Algodyne, Ardian, Embol-X, Embrace, General Surgical Innovations, Gen-Probe, IDesia, Mentor, and Neocrin.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Brent secured a $39 million jury award in a patent case for a major manufacturer of minimally invasive surgical instruments. In the countersuit, Brent obtained summary judgment of inequitable conduct leading to an award of over $1 million in attorneys' fees.
Brent has been featured on Fox 11 News concerning his John Anson Ford Award for intellectual property litigation on behalf of the L.A. County Commission on Human Relations. Brent is on the executive committee of the regional board of the Anti-Defamation League, author of the successful ADL amicus brief to the 9th Circuit in the Boise case, and co-chair of the ADL summer associate legal research program.
